In ancient Rome the annual festival called Parentalia was observed. It lasted until February 21st, and was a day for families to honor and commemorate their deceases loved ones, particularly parents. During the week of Parentalia, all Roman temples were closed and all wedding ceremonies forbidden. Ancestral tombs were visited and offerings of wine and flowers were made to family ghosts.
