In Japan the demons of winter are exorcised in the annual festival called Setsu-bun. Beans are placed in every corner of the house, and pointed branches and sardine heads are mounted over doorways. Purification rites are performed by priests in all shrines and temples. Prayers are written on pieces of paper and cast from bridges into the rivers below them.
