On approximately this date in China, the annual spring fertility festival, Li Chum is celebrated. Bamboo and paper effigies of a water buffalo are carried through the streets by a temple-bound procession. Upon reaching the temple the effigies are set on fire in the belief that prayers for prosperity will be taken to the heavens by the smoke that rises forth.
