In ancient Rome, on this date, a sacred festival called the Feast of the Ass was celebrated in honor of the Ass that saved the goddess Vesta, whom presided over the hearth. Her temple was lit on this day by a sacred fire tended by six virgin Priestesses known as the Vestal Virgins.
