January 28th

In the Shetland Islands, the centuries-old fire festival known as Up-Helly-Aa is held on the last Tuesday of January (which normally falls around this date). The festival marks the traditional end of the Yuletide and pays tribute to the old gods and goddess of the Ancient Norse religion. It climaxes with the torching of a replica of a Viking ship, and a ritual prayer to drive away evil from the village homes.
