January 7th

In the seventh century, is was a custom on this day for a special Epiphany Cake to be baked with a coin inside it. Whoever was fortunate enought to recieve the portion with the coin was saluted by the family as "king" or "queen" for the day. As a part of this tradition the "King" or "Queen" would draw symbols of crosses on the ceiling in white chalk to ward off misfortune and to drive away evil spirits.
