In 1888 the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was established. It offered teachings on ceremonial magick, Kabbalah, divination, and other occult-oriented sciences. Many of the practices are still in use today by modern-day practices. Aleister Crowley was initiated in the Order in the year 1898 but was later expelled.
The sacred fire in the Temple of Vesta was rekindled on this day by the Vestal Virgins in Rome, to mark the beginning of the Roman New Year.
In Bulgaria Granny March's Day is celebrated on this day. Granny March is an old Witch-Goddess who presides over the month of March. It is beleived that a woman who works on this day, causes Granny March to get angry and destroy the crops with a storm.
