Alabaster is a fine-grained form of gypsum — it is therefore, a Hydrated Calcium Sulphate mineral. Although it is typically colorless, white or gray, it can also be any one of a number of colors, ranging from red to brown or yellow. It is very soft, and has been popular as a base material for carving ornamental stone sculptures such as statues for many thousands of years. It often forms in fissures in rock strata.
