Calcite is a soft carbonate mineral that forms a significant part of the Earth's crust — consequently, many different kinds are found in a wide variety of geological environments. These include several parts of the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, as well as across large regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Fortunately, it is easy to determine when a specimen is formed from calcium carbonate, as it froths quickly on contact with acids — even with weak ones such as vinegar. Other similar carbonate minerals, such as Dolomite, do not effervesce nearly as readily.

Calcite, sometimes known as Iceland Spar, was once used by the Norse as a sun stone, as well as a divinatory tool to help navigate a course for ships at sea. It is still used as a healing stone by traditional Pennsylvania Dutch healers, who call it the "divinity stone." |

Yellow calcite clears the mind. The red stones energize and tone the blood. Pink calcite opens the heart to recieve affection and love. Blue crystals may be used during purification and healing rituals. Green calcite may be used as a money magnet or prosperity stone.  Bravery is encouraged but not at the cost of stability. Aurichalcite teaches the lesson that the only thing to fear is fear itself. It enhances tact, peace, and harmony during social activities. This stone also allows for the release of old, non-productive emotions. 
 Calcite occurs in a spectacular array of colors and over 200 different crystal variants, all of which have perfect cleavage in three directions, forming rhombohedrons. they can range from being completely clear to white, orange, red, brown, yellow, blue, or green. The different colors are due to the presence of varying levels of chemical impurities, with the most common of these being the metallic elements cobalt, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. The example to the left is of the blue colored variety.

Yellow calcite is associated with the solar plexus chakra.  Red calcite is an energizing and detoxifying stone. It also brings stability to one's will, and increases inner strength. It assists with problem solving. It can also attract love. Red calcite is a stone that eases and releases fear. It calms the rushes of adrenaline caused by fear. This is particularly helpful for those who are warriors or "do battle" in their daily lives. Physically red calcite is beneficial for genitals, reproductive organs, gonads, ovaries, hips, lets, feet, stiff muscles and joints. Red calcite is also helpful for healthy sexuality and sensuality. It is also beneficial for conditions where detoxification is necessary, such as food poisoning or alcoholism recovery. Although these are the things that red calcite helps with most, it can also be used for all other healings because of its relationship with the base chakra, which is the root of all physicality. Red calcite is associated with the base chakra. Calcite is comprised of calcium carbonate — this factor alone is not enough to identify it though, as there are also two other major categories of minerals with the same chemical composition. These do have different crystal structures, however, with the most common of the two being Aragonite. This has an orthorhombic geometry, whereas Vaterite, which is much rarer, has a hexagonal system; Calcite on the other hand is trigonal.
