Carrollite, which is composed of Copper Cobalt Nickel Sulphide, is an uncommon mineral that originates in hydrothermal veins. It is extracted as a ore of cobalt, and is named after the locality where it was first discovered Carroll County, Maryland, USA. The main source, however, is the Kamoto Principal mine in the south eastern part of the Congo basin, and area that is rich in valuable metal ores. It forms octagonal metallic crystals, often in association with other minerals, especially the copper ore, chalcopyrite. Good specimens with attractive crystals are sought after by collectors. This mineral has a metallic luster and a gray streak.
