Celestite

Celestite is a favorite among mineral collectors, it's sky blue color is unique in the mineral kingdom. It is usually blue but can also be colorless, with yellow and tints of red, green and brown. It is mainly found in parts of New York, Michigan, Ohio, Colorado, California, Madagascar, Sicily, Poland, Czechloslovakia, and Germany. The best specimens are said to come from the U.S., but many fine crystals have been found elsewhere.

Celestite, which is composed of Strontium Sulphate, is an attractive, pale blue mineral that is used both as an ore of strontium and for display specimens by collectors. Such pieces are especially sought after where they occur alongside other minerals that have strongly contrasting colors — sulphur being a good example. It ia also associated with calcite, fluorite, gypsum, and strontianite, and some samples fluoresce under untra-violet light. It can be found as a hollow nodule, or in fibrous and granular forms. Celestite can be confused with barite, but a flame test burns red, then the sample contains strontium, and the identification is confirmed. It has a specific gravity of 3.9+, a vitreous luster and a white streak.
