Chalcanthite




Chalcanthite, which is Hyradrated Copper Sulphate, is a bright blue mineral that is popular with collectors. These days many examples are, however, very convincing fakes produced by unscrupulous dealers to be passed off as the genuine article. It is very soluble in water, and quickly degrades if left in a damp atmosphere. It forms on or near the surface when copper bearing solutions evaporate, however, and may well go through many cycles of being dissolved and then re-evaporating at a later date. In some places such as the Chuquicamata and El Teniente mines in Chile, it is a major ore of copper. Chalchanthite has a specific gravity of 2.2 - 2.3, a vitreous luster, and a pale blue to colorless streak.

Since the mineral is readily soluable in water, it may "disappear" if not stored in a humidity free environment. Do NOT prepare an elixir of this mineral via the normal method.
