Coals |
Coal is an organic material that is formed by the fossilization of plant material, typically that of swamp areas. The process begins when plants or trees die and are then covered by mud. Over time, this gets buried by successive layers of soil, and eventually is carbonized by heat and pressure into coal. There are many different grades, and most are very valuable fuels consequently, they are extracted for commercial use the world over. The best known form is anthracite &$151; this is a hard, black substance that is primarily used for heating domestic and commercial buildings. Another variety is bituminous coal, which is mainly used to generate electricity in power stations.
