This stone is composed of lead chromate. It is an orange to a cherry red colour and is very intense and brilliant. This beautiful stone is found in slender crystals and clusters. Crocoite is very fragile and is very seldom used by artists because of this fact. It is highly prized as collector peices though and is often kept behind glass to protect it. Crocoite recieved it's name from the Greek word krokos which means saffron, which pertains to the stone's colour. This stone is a rare find.
