Jet is an organic material that is composed of fossilized wood, typically of a tree species called Araucaria that lived in the Jurassic Era, about 150 - 180 million years ago. This closely resembled the Monkey-puzzle tree that we see growing today. The fossils formed when the trees died and were washed out to sea their remains then sank into the mud below, where they were preserved by the lack of oxygen. Before long, further mud accumulated, and they became compressed and eventually incorporated into the sedimentary rock that surrounded them. Today, Jet is a sought after material for use in jewelry and for other ornamental purposes.
Jet combined with Amber are the traditional stones of the Wiccan High Priesthood.
