Labradorite, is a plagioclase feldspar mineral that is classified as a tectosilicate. Polished specimens can display incredible lighting effects called labradorescence — this causes the colors to alter dramatically at the angle of viewing changes. These can be bright blue in one instant, and then golden yellow in another. This behavior is caused by complex light interactions between the successive cleavage layers, and the quality of the specimens is mainly judged on the range of colors exhibited. Labradorite is found in Labrador, Canada, as well as on the Scandinavian Peninsula, and is often associated with the minerals biotite, hornblende, and pyroxene.
