The term Moldavite was originally given to a type of tektite that was found in the Moldau Valley in the Czech Republic. These days, however, any tektite that has a similar form tends to be labeled with the same appellation. It is typically a bottle green color; however, it can also be colorless or even black. It occurs as distinct fragments that lack any clearly defined shape or crystal structure, and while it bears many resemblences to obsidian, its actual origins remain unexplained. Moldavites are highly sought after by both jewelers and specimen collectors exceptional examples are set as valuable gemstones. This stone has a vitreous to dull luster and a white streak.
