Pyrite, which is an iron sulphide mineral, is sometimes also referred to as "Fool's Gold", due to its shiny gold-colored crystals. It is often found in association with calcite, fluorite, quartz, galena, sphalerite, and many other minerals. There are many different forms, including pseudomorphs of fossils, where the original material has been replaced by pyrite crystals, as well as nodules or flattened structures known as "pyrite suns". It is not used as a significant iron ore, but in the past has been mined for its sulphur content. These days it is mostly extracted for sale as commercial mineral speciments.
