Rhodonite, which is classified as a inosilicate mineral in the pyroxene group, is typically a strong pink or pale red color. It can, however dependent on the relative amounts of trace impurities of iron, magnesium, calcium, or zinc also be a gray or black color, especially if it has been exposed for any length of time. Rhodonite is usually reasonably easy to identify, but can be confused with rhodochrosite and pyroxmagnite. The former can be distinguished, as it often has white streaks of calcite running through it, but the latter is more difficult, sometimes needing x-ray analysis. Rhodochrosite has a vitreous, dull, or pearly luster and a white streak. Its specific gravity is 3.4 - 3.7.
