Selenites(s) |
Selenite is a form of gypsum that often occurs as completely transparent crystals. It does however, also occur in white, gray, or with various hues caused by trace amounts of colored metallic components. It is named after the Green moon goddess Selene, since it is thought that the pearly luster gives it a moon-like glow under certain lighting conditions. It often forms crystal twins of one sort or another like the "fish-tail" twin as seen above. Others include swallowtail and spearhead twins, whereas some take on a spiral structure these are known as "Ram's Horn Selenite". Selenite has a specific gravity of 2.3+, a vitreous to pearly luster, and a white streak.
