Sphene, which is also known as Titanite, is a Calcium Titanium Nesosilicate mineral that is named after its high titanium content. It forms good crystal systems that are often twinned — these display a strong adamantine luster. In strongly colored specimens this is enhanced with marked pleochroism — that is, different colors can be seen when it is viewed from different angles. Although this property results in very appealing gemstones, titanite's moderate hardness limits its utility for jewelry. It is however, highly regarded by collectors for display specimens. It is found in association with various minerals including calcite, chlorite, feldspar, quartz and zircon.
