Spinel is chemically very similar to ruby, except that it also has magnesium in its crystal structure. Both get their typical red coloration from trace quantities of chromium, and while rubies are the more valuable gem, gem-quality spinel is still considered highly desirable. It usually occurs as octahedrons, with twinned crystals being a characteristic feature; however, other forms, such as dodecahedrons, are also found. It is often associated with the minerals, calcite, corundum, dolomite, and garnets. Field identifications can be made by observing the crystal forms, as well as by checking the list of primary properties such as fracture, shape, specific gravity, and so on.
