Sulphur is a yellow crystaline element that occurs in three different ways as the native form, and as a wide variety of sulphide or sulphate compounds. Good specimens of native sulphur are very attractive, and are consequently highly sought after by collectors. Pure sulphur can be formed by the action of bacteria on sulphate minerals, as well as by the evaporation of volcanic gases or by geologic processes. Extensive deposits created by three of these are exploited for industrial extraction, since sulphur is an important constituent of a large number of commercial products, including fertilizers, explosives, and pesticides.
