7. The Chariot

The Chariot is the seventh card of the Major Arcana. This is the card of control and being in charge of your conscious and subconscious awareness. The charioteer rides high in the helm of the chariot which is being drawn by two sphinxes, each whom are independent and would go in opposite directions if not kept on a close rein. The two sphinxes are representative of conscious awareness (1. The Magician) and Subconscious awareness, (2. The High Priestess) . The charioteer is the soul or total awareness which is keeping both under tight rein, and not allowing either to stray to far off course. This is the seventh step of the journey which reminds you to take charge of yourself. When he shows up in your spread he says to you, "The road of life is a bumpy one."
The Chariot can be a gentle yet demanding card. It is a card that tells us to lead by example, to take charge of our lives and paths, and to treat ourselves kindly yet severely as necessary. Too often on our path of life we find ourselves attempting to believe that we can walk through it with complacency. "I want what I want when i want it, and I'll get it no matter who I hurt.", is often what we're known to say or believe. Other times we think, "Well I'll just pray for what I want then wait for it to be given to me." The road of life is a bumpy one, things don't just come we have to work to get them, but not at the expense of others. This card reminds you that you have to keep control of your desire to be in control. We have to remember to be wise and yet willing to work. This is the card of attainment if using both wisdom and willingness.
