Chert

Chert is a type of hard, microcrystaline quartz that is composed of chalcedony. A large amount of this rock is derived from the silicaceous skeletons of microscopic marine creatures called radiolarians. Other kinds form in non-marine environments where sedimentary rocks have been washed out and replaced by silica. Chert has a very fine grain size, and can be colored anywhere from white to gray to black. It occurs in massive layers as well as in the form of nodules in chalk or limestone. There is no clear distinction between chert, chalcedony, flint, jasper and agate — any names that are used in this group are almost entirely subjective. This stone has a dull, pearly, or sub-vitreous luster and a colorless streak.
