Malachite is a soft green mineral which usually features swirling patterns of dark green bands. It is composed of a form of copper carbonate, and usually occurs where there are both copper and limestone deposits. It is often found in association with azurite, goethite, or calcite. The mineral's strong and persistent color when ground into a powder once made it a popular ingredient for making green paint. This was done from antiquity until about the year 1800; it was, for instance, extracted at King Solomon's Mines for over three thousand years. It has since been replaced by synthetic alternatives. Malachite remains a popular stone in the jewelry trade.

Malachite was considered an appropriate talisman for children. Evil spirits were kept at bay and babies slept soundly if a malachite crystal was attached to the side of an infant's cradle. Germans beleived that malachite would protect them agains falling; and it was thought to be able to warn the wearer of impending disaster by cracking into several pieces prior to the incident. Because of the swirling patterns inherent in the stone, malachite was also popular in Italy as protection against the Evil Eye.
Ancient Egyptians carved malachite with an image of the sun, the source of light, as a protective amulet against necromancers, witches, and demons.
Malachite may be a psi-tech antidote to toxic plutonium wastes.
