Most naturally occuring topaz is colorless — such stones being commmonly found in igneous rocks and high temperature veins, they are consequently not considered especially desirable. Blue Topaz, on the other hand, has significantly more value, but while it does occur naturally, most of the examples seen for sale are actually clear crystals that have been artificially irradiated and heated to generate the blue color. Depending on the exact treatment regime, any one of a number of shades of blue can be created, and the resultant gems are now the most commonly used stones in the marketplace. Topaz, which is composed of Aluminum Fluorine Silicate, is a gemstone that is commonly used in the jewelry trade. Its attractive color, adamantine luster, and inherent hardness make it ideally suited for this purpose. It has perfect cleavage in one direction, and conchoidal fracture. Although it occurs as well formed, often longitudinally striated crystals, it can also be found in granular and massive forms, usually in association with minerals such as cassiterite, fluorite, mica, quartz, and tourmaline. The crystals can be any one of several different colors — golden variants, which are known as "Imperial Topaz", are amongst the most desirable forms. This stone has a white streak.
