Dioptase, which is composed of Hydrated Copper Silicated, is classified as a cyclosilicate mineral, it has a vivid blue-green coloration, which makes it very popular with mineral collectors. Although it is sometimes used as a gemstone, its cleavage is too marked, and it is not hard enough to be widely accepted for this purpose. It produces good rhombohedral crystals with a high vitreous luster these may be transparent or translucent. Dioptase also occurs in massive and encrusted forms, often in association with calcite, cerussite, chrysocolla, dolomite, limonite, and other copper based materials.
