Rational Horizon—The rational horizon is the geocentric horizon (a great circle parallel to the apparent horizon but passing through the centre of the Earth) projected onto the celestial sphere (the sky).
Reception—A planet, when in one of the dignities (beneficial positions) of another planet. Receives one of the classical Ptolemaic (major) aspects from that other planet. See Essential Dignities and Debilities.
Rectification—The process of adjusting or determining a birth time. By referencing known events and dates and progressing planets, the birth chart most likely to match the person is identified.
Regiomontanus House System—A system that begins by dividing the chart into four quadrants based on the MC and the IC of the chart. These quadrants are then subdivided into the houses by dividing them into equal spatial arcs (division of distance on Earth) and projecting them back onto the ecliptic. (As opposed to dividing the quadrants by the measure of time it takes the signs to rise.) The beginning of each house is then 5° before each chart division, so the chart divisions represent points of maximum intensity, rather than the entrance to the house.
Rejoicing—See Joys.
Relationship Chart—Often confused with a composite chart, the relationship chart represents in a single drawing the planetary information of two individual horoscopes based on their midpoints (halfway points) between planets in time and space.
Relationship Houses—These are the Third, Seventh and Eleventh Houses. Associated with the air signs. Also called relative houses.
Retrograde Motion—When a planet appears to be travelling backwards from the perspective of Earth. The energy of a retrograde planet is less assertive and more internalised.
Retrograde Station—The point where a planet stops moving forward (direct motion) and begins retrograde motion.
Return Chart—A chart based on the time and place that a planet returns to the exact position it was at the moment of birth or an important event.
Rising Degree—See Ascendant.
Rising Planets—The first planet of the First House. If none are present, then the rising planet is the planet in the Second House, and so on. Some planets indicate good things (see Planets) and some bring stress and tension (See Planets).
Rising Sign—See Ascendant.
Ruler—Every sign is allocated a planetary ruler: Aries (Mars); Taurus (Venus); Gemini (Mercury); Cancer (the Moon); Leo (the Sun); Virgo (Mercury); Libra (Venus); Scorpio (Pluto); Sagittarius (Jupiter); Capricorn (Saturn); Aquarius (Uranus); Pisces (Neptune). Before the discovery of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, Scorpio was ruled by Mars, Aquarius by Saturn and Pisces by Jupiter. Venus in Taurus means Taurus in Dignity. See Essential Dignities and Debilities.
